We are in the midst of awards season. Gowns, gowns and more gowns are on deck over the next few weeks. Last week we were treated to the eye candy of the Golden Globes. This week we have the looks of the SAG Awards to mull over. Some dresses at the Golden Globes were less than thrilling and received negative attention. I am going to write about those fashion missteps and turn the eye towards how the Golden Globes fashion don'ts redeemed themselves at the SAGs.
While many were a fan of Kate Hudson's white Marchesa gown at the GG, I wasn't on the bandwagon. I do love Marchesa but the stiffness of the bodice, while a feat in execution, didn't do it for me. The Emilio Pucci dress she wore at the SAGs complemented her petite frame more in my opinion. With wins at both ceremonies, Sandra Bullock is in the public's eye more than ever these days. My eyes did not care for the sheerness of the skirt on her purple Bottega Veneta gown at the GG. Maybe one more layer of fabric would have done the trick. Her choice for the SAGs, a black Alexander McQueen dress with striking blue detailing around the neckline, was more sophisticated. I had previously mentioned my distaste of songstress Mariah Carey stuffing herself into ill-fitting gowns. Mariah's black no-no at the GG was an example of this but the red Valentino she wore at the SAGs was more becoming. Keeping her *girls* under wraps this time around proved to be a good choice. Nicole Kidman was washed out by the color of her blush Nina Ricci dress at the GG. (Not to mention how the dress hung on her. Her frail frame was weighted down by bows.) Nicole's SAGs look, a multicolored sequin Oscar de la Renta dress paired with flowy locks, made her skin color appear to be warmer. My-oh-my how the NY Times' Cathy Horyn was reamed for her comments about Christina Hendricks pink Christian Siriano dress at the GG! The ruffles were far too much. (Much like the designer himself. Don't ever say "fierce" around me.) Luckily for the curvy Mad Men knockout, her fiery red hair and perfect red lipstick (or shall I say her entire upper torso) were good distractions. Christina took a safer route on the latter red carpet with a sleek red gown by Carolina Herrera. Tina Fey's purple Salvatore Ferragamo shift was quite a contrast to the bold print and massive volume of the Zac Posen dress she wore at the GG. She had the last laugh this week.
Perhaps you have seen a picture of yourself and thought... that color didn't suit my skin tone or the fit just didn't work for my body type. When it comes to getting dressed, some days are better than others. We learn from our choices and mistakes, as well as from those around us, and that's what being Superstylin* is all about.
Thoughts anyone? Let me hear your voice. I welcome the dialogue. xo
