It was a rainy day in Los Angeles for the Golden Globes but the fashion was not dampened by the weather. Many starlets prepared for the weather by having wavy hair and pulled back dos. The most prevalent accessories flaunted by the men of the night were beards, beards and more beards. They were sported by "The Dude" Jeff Bridges, my main man George Clooney *swoon* and the oh-so-dapper Don Draper himself, Mr. Jon Hamm (and for the win, he was dressed in Tom Ford). The carat count was high on the red carpet. My favorite baubles of the evening were a beautiful necklace and amazing earrings. Julia Roberts paired a vintage YSL LBD with a Van Cleef & Arpels sautoir. Courtney Cox wore jaw-dropping Lorraine Schwartz black sapphire and diamond earrings. Julianne Moore, who wore a Balenciaga dress, sported GORGEOUS Bulgari emerald drop earrings.
Mariah Carey should take fashion cues from several women of a certain age. She constantly stuffs herself into dresses and last night's Herve Leger was another fashion misstep. Being sexy isn't always about wearing tight clothing or having a plunging decolletage. While constantly trying to recapture her 90s heyday, she comes off entirely cougar-esque. Her look is one that needs to evolve. Sophisticated ladies present at the ceremony whose looks have evolved over the years included Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep in a belted Chris March which was modern in shape, the still beautiful Sophia Loren (albeit it with a little help) and Sigourney Weaver who was draped in a bright green hue with pleats and tucks hugging her curves. They know how to play up their assets and knowing what works for your body is half the battle.
Many of the ladies wore asymmetrical one-shoulder dresses. Fashion risk taker Maggie Gyllenhaal chose a RM by Roland Mouret peach origami dress. Kate Winslet wore a Stefano Pilati for Atelier Yves Saint Laurent dress with beading detail outlining the contours on the right side of her body. Anna Kendrick's ruffly Marchesa was a fun choice for the Up in the Air star. Ginnifer Goodwin stood out in the crowd in her cobalt blue Vionnet cocktail dress. Reese Witherspoon looked sleek in a sapphire blue Giorgio Armani Prive gown. (No Jake Gyllenhaal on the arm. That was always a good accessory on her.) Winner of the evening Drew Barrymore in nude Atelier Versace had me mesmerized with the sea urchin pouf on her shoulder (she lost me with the one on her hip). Marion Cotillard in Dior looked like perfection, all the way down to her matching fingernails.
For those who love more romantic and old glamour looks, there was no shortage of them on the red carpet. The fullness of Lea Michele's Oscar de la Renta dress was over the top. The rich deep red tone of Zoe Saldana's tiered Louis Vuitton was not to be missed. The impeccable Penelope Cruz looked radiant in a black lace and ribbon gown by Giorgio Armani Prive. (Where was her man Javier Bardem? Inquiring minds want to know Penny.)
Fashion was bright at the Golden Globes. So much shimmer and sparkle! Toni Colette dazzled in an art-deco inspired gown by Elie Saab. Anna Paquin looked va-va-voom in Stella McCartney with a dare-to-there plunging neckline. Jennifer Garner sparkled in grey Versace. Olivia Wilde was a knockout in black bedazzled Gucci while Heather Graham's Elie Saab also begged for attention. Paula Patton looked effortlessly chic in a belted gray and black sequin gown by Kaufman Franco.
Last night, my eyes were drawn to architectural dresses. The pleating detail on Diane Kruger's hot pink Christian Lacroix dress was absolutely lovely. The ruffles and train on Chloe Sevigny's lilac Valentino dress were exquisite. Rose Byrne was an A+ in dark purple Lanvin with Neil Lane flower brooch on the hip and her waves held in place with a sparkly hair pin.
After seeing the outfits at the 2010 Golden Globes, I highly anticipate the red carpet at the Oscars...
