Today Superstylin* took a fashion field trip to see the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at the de Young Museum. Mannequins spoke and sang as viewers walked the galleries containing familiar themes of the designer's work including nautical stripes, virgins, androgyny and second skins such as tattoos and flayed organs. A portion of the exhibit contained Gaultier's work in furniture design. The designer has collaborated with companies such as Roche Bobois and dabbled in interior design as well.
No show of Gaultier's would be complete without his signature corsets. The first ever infamous cone bra was crafted out of newspaper on Jean Paul's teddy bear "Nana" as a child. The corsetry room was abuzz containing garments and sketches from Madonna's Blonde Ambition Tour.
Gaultier is a reknowned costume designer for film and the ballet. Wardrobe sketches from City of Lost Children and Pedro Almodovar's films Bad Education and The Skin I Live In adorned the walls. Costumes on display included items worn in The Fifth Element.
Many musical artists turn to Jean Paul for his artistry. Various pieces on display were worn by the likes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kylie Minogue, Nirvana and Depeche Mode. Little did Superstylin* know that Monsieur Gaultier was a musician himself. In 1989 Jean Paul Gaultier cut a house track entitled "Aow Tou Dou Zat" which reached number 52 on the European dance charts.
