Tonight I was treated to the sweet sounds of Esperanza Spalding. It was my first time seeing her live and it definitely won't be my last. She played a sweet mix of tunes: some old, some borrowed and we were treated to some new. Currently Miss Spalding is working on a project with the drummer and keyboardist onstage with her tonight and they played music from their upcoming album for the first time to a crowd. When sh*t was gonna get crazy, Esperanza told her adoring audience they were gonna "freak it". And that they did. So much talent and soul in this young lady. Definitely keeping an eye on her career.
Two standout songs of the evening:
- Betty Carter's Jazz Ain't Nothing But Soul
- Michael Jackson's I Can't Help It
